The app
Is the app free?
Yes. Reading the Bible and listening with the built-in narrator are free, and you don’t need an account for either. Hearing Scripture in a personal AI voice is a paid feature, because that audio is generated by AI just for you. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
Which translations are included?
The King James Version (English) and the Chinese Union Version (和合本), both bundled for offline use. Switch with a tap, or read English and 中文 verse by verse, side by side.
Do I need an account?
Not to read, and not to listen with the built-in narrator. You sign in only to create or use a personal voice, so your voices and purchases stay linked to you.
Personal voices
How do I create a voice?
Open the Voices tab and start a new voice. Choose whose voice it is, confirm consent, then read the short prompts aloud. About 15 seconds of clear speech is enough. When the voice is ready, any chapter can be read aloud in it.
Can I make a voice from a recording of a loved one I already have?
Yes. When you start a new voice, choose to upload a recording instead of recording now, then pick an audio file you already have, such as a voice memo or a saved voicemail. Clear speech from one person, with little background noise, gives the best result.
The same consent rule applies to every voice, including one made from an existing recording: you can only create it if it is your own voice, or you have the recorded person’s explicit permission. See the next question.
What consent do you require?
From our Privacy Policy: “Voice is personal. We only create a voice from a recording you provide, and only after you confirm that it is your own voice, or that you have the recorded person's explicit permission. We use your voice solely to read Scripture aloud inside the App. We never share it, sell it, or use it to train models for anyone else.”
From our Terms of Use: “You must not use the App to impersonate, defraud, harass, or create a voice of anyone without their consent, or for any unlawful purpose. We may suspend or remove voices and accounts that violate this.”
The app asks you to confirm consent every time you create a voice.
Where does voice processing happen?
When you create or listen with a personal voice, processing happens outside your device. From our Privacy Policy:
- “Creating a voice sends your recording and the Bible text you choose to hear to our voice provider, MiniMax, which operates in the People's Republic of China.”
- “When you create a voice, your recording is sent to MiniMax. When you listen to a chapter in your voice, that chapter's text is sent to MiniMax to generate the audio. We send only what's needed; we do not send your email or identity to MiniMax.”
- “Our backend and AI voice processing involve servers in the United States (Supabase) and the People's Republic of China (MiniMax). By creating a voice, you consent to your recording and chosen chapter text being processed in those locations.”
Your voice recordings and the audio generated in your voice are stored with Supabase, our backend. The Bible reader itself works offline, and your reading history stays on your device.
How do I delete a voice or my account?
To delete a voice: Voices tab → ••• → Delete Voice. To delete your entire account and all data: Settings → Delete Account. Both are permanent and remove your data from our servers.
Exactly what is deleted, and what to do if you can’t reach the app: Delete your account.
Purchases
How do I manage or cancel a subscription?
On your iPhone or iPad: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Sojourner: Audio Bible.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it there first, then delete the account.
